For as long as we have lived in the Greater Portland Metro Area, we have had a garden. My husband is a wonderful gardener, and he’s planned and planted gardens everywhere we’ve lived. Each year, his approach to sourcing plants evolves, and we have learned a lot along the way. This is mostly an opportunity to share some of the shops & nurseries where we have bought starter plants and supplies, as well as to share some gardening tips for the Pacific Northwest.

You can totally buy at Home Depot or Loews or Fred Meyer or another big store. But there are more options than just that!

Exploring Green Havens: Where to Get Plants in Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon, often referred to as the “City of Roses,” is renowned for its lush greenery and vibrant plant life. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a novice plant enthusiast, or simply looking to add a touch of nature to your living space, this city offers a plethora of options for acquiring plants. From specialized nurseries to bustling farmers’ markets, Portland’s diverse plant-shopping scene caters to all preferences and needs.

One of the most iconic places to find plants in Portland is the Portland Nursery. With its two locations, Stark Street and Division Street, this nursery boasts an impressive variety of plants, from native species to exotic finds. Knowledgeable staff members are always on hand to offer guidance on plant care and selection, making it an ideal destination for both beginners and experienced gardeners seeking advice.

For those seeking a more community-oriented plant shopping experience, the Portland Farmers Market is a must-visit. This market, which operates in various locations throughout the city, offers an array of locally grown plants and flowers. Shopping here not only supports local farmers and growers, but also provides access to unique and seasonal plant selections that reflect the region’s rich horticultural diversity.

If you’re in search of rare and hard-to-find plants, the Xera Plants nursery is a hidden gem. Specializing in drought-tolerant and unique plant species, Xera Plants offers an opportunity to bring truly distinctive flora into your garden or home. Their knowledgeable staff can help you find the perfect additions to your collection and provide insights into caring for these distinctive plants.

In addition to dedicated plant nurseries, Portland’s DIY and sustainability culture has given rise to plant swaps and pop-up plant shops. These events, often advertised through local social media platforms, offer a chance to exchange plants with fellow enthusiasts or purchase plants from local growers. It’s a fantastic way to connect with the community, share your plant knowledge, and discover new botanical treasures.

Portland, Oregon, embraces its reputation as a haven for plant lovers by offering a wide range of options to acquire plants. Whether you’re interested in native species, rare finds, or supporting local growers, the city’s nurseries, farmers’ markets, and community events have you covered. So, whether you’re nurturing a lush garden or simply adding a touch of green to your urban space, Portland’s plant scene invites you to explore, connect, and cultivate your love for all things botanical.
